It started as an ordinary bus ride. It ended with a lesson I have never forgotten. Several years ago, I was travelling home on a bus in Ghana when something happened that changed the way I see people.

Like many buses at the time, there was a television mounted at the front. As we made our way through the evening traffic, a movie played while passengers watched quietly. Some laughed, others reacted to the characters, and before long, many of us had become absorbed in the story unfolding on the screen.

Partway through the journey, the bus stopped to pick up more passengers.

A man climbed aboard and found a seat. Within minutes, he became visibly frustrated with the movie. He criticised the characters, questioned their decisions and expressed his disappointment at what he believed he was watching.

The rest of the bus remained silent.

The journey continued.

Eventually, I reached my destination and stepped off the bus. As I walked home that evening, I couldn't stop thinking about what I had witnessed.

The man hadn't seen the beginning of the movie.

He had joined the story halfway through.

Yet from that single moment, he had formed an opinion about everything he was watching.

The thought stayed with me.

It wasn't that the man lacked wisdom or understanding. He was simply responding to the only part of the story he had seen.

How often do we do the same with people?

We meet them halfway through their story. We see one decision, one conversation or one season of life and quietly believe we know who they are.

Yet we rarely see the chapters that came before.

The childhood that shaped them.

The disappointments they carried.

The sacrifices no one noticed.

The grief they never spoke about.

The mistakes they learned from.

The resilience it took simply to keep going.

Looking back, I didn't realise that ordinary bus ride was quietly shaping my philosophy about life and the people I would encounter.

Years later, when I began studying social work, I found myself returning to that lesson again and again. It reinforced something I had already come to believe.

Understanding begins not with assumptions, but with curiosity.

Not with judgement, but with listening.

That philosophy continues to guide me today, and it became one of the foundations upon which Social Work 360 was built.

Social Work 360 exists to create opportunities for people to be heard and their stories to be honoured.

Because every person carries a story.

And every story deserves the opportunity to be heard.

A vanilla cake.

Every delicious cake begins with carefully chosen ingredients.

Flour.

Eggs.

Butter.

Sugar.

Vanilla.

Each ingredient is added with intention because every one contributes to the final outcome.

Now imagine replacing the sugar with salt.

Or adding a handful of sand to the mixture.

The cake may still look like a cake.

But it will never become what it was intended to be.

Perhaps our homes, workplaces, schools, and communities are not so different.

Every day, we contribute ingredients to the environments around us.

Our words.

Our attitudes.

Our kindness.

Our patience.

Our encouragement.

Our willingness to listen.

The opportunities we create.

The way we respond when someone is struggling.

These are the ingredients that shape a person's experience.

Some ingredients create environments where people feel safe, valued, and supported.

Others can leave people feeling isolated, misunderstood, or overwhelmed.

Mental health is influenced by many factors, and no single ingredient tells the whole story. But each of us has the opportunity to contribute something positive to the environments we share.
